The campaign is gathering more and more support. Now is the time to step up our efforts and lobby Members of Parliament (MPs) to sign Early Day Motion (EDM) 1081 and demand the Tories scrap their plans to abolish the NHS bursary.
Use this simple lobby tool from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) – all you need is your postcode and a model letter will appear which you can send to your MP in less a minute.
In his autumn statement, Chancellor George Osborne announced the scrapping of the NHS bursary in England for new student nurses, midwives and allied health professionals from 2017.
The NHS bursary system will be replaced with the standard undergraduate system, with fees of up to £9,000 and a much larger student loan for maintenance.
These changes would see students burdened with at least £51,600 of debt, plus interest and any overdraft and commercial debt.
These changes will damage the future supply of healthcare professionals and patient and staff safety, by exacerbating recruitment problems.
This campaign to save the NHS bursary is part of a wider movement to save our NHS from destructive cuts and privatization.
