The Student Assembly Against Austerity fully supports the National Union of Students (NUS), supports Students’ Unions affiliating to NUS and opposes any attempts to disaffiliate from NUS.
NUS represents 7 million students in the UK, bringing over 600 college and university Students’ Unions together into a national movement.
NUS provides huge financial benefits to both Students’ Unions and students. The huge array of discounts NUS has negotiated with various companies saves students millions of pounds every year. With austerity making it difficult for students to make ends meet, it’s vital we recognise that we are all better off with NUS.
NUS is the national voice of students and is at the forefront of campaigning in defence of education and for a better world.
Last month at NUS National Conference students voted overwhelmingly in favour of NUS leading huge, vibrant, inclusive campaigns against tuition fees, education cuts and in support of equality and liberation for all.
We need a strong, united national student movement now more than ever. The Tory government are launching attack after attack on students, whether it’s taking away our maintenance grants, putting us into even more debt, shutting down our colleges and courses or threatening to increase tuition fees yet again.
NUS has also been at the forefront of stopping the deportation of 48,000 international students, of campaigning against sexual harassment, LGBTphobia, racism and disability discrimination as well as championing the movements against climate change and war.
We urge students to join us in saying #YesToNUS – let’s keep on building the biggest democratic movement of students in Europe.
