As the Early Day Motion in Parliament that the 50 MPs have signed up to notes, in order to make the student loan book profitable for private companies it would need to be accompanied by either subsidies from the taxpayer or an increase in the financial burden placed on graduates.
But the student movement will not allow politicians to burden students with even more debt without a fight!
The Student Assembly Against Austerity will be continuing in our campaign to get as many MPs as possible to come out against the student debt sell off over the coming weeks. We are determined to build up enough political pressure to get the government to drop their disastrous plans to sell off our student loans once and for all.
Over 1,000 students have used our lobbying tool to lobby their MP to sign up to Early Day Motion 542 – it takes just 1 minute using the online tool here.
Targeting MPs will be one of the focuses of February’s national week of action to stop the privatisation of student loans – already more than 40 campuses are planning to take part. Why not get in touch to volunteer to organise something on your campus today?
