As of today - Thursday 26th March - all staff have been banned from making any room bookings, this has meant the cancellation of lectures, seminars and tutorials. The reason for this is the university wanted all staff and students to come into town and welcome the First Chancellor of our university at her inauguration, Dawn French. We decided this was the perfect opportunity to demonstrate so that Dawn and the local community would understand how our university is really run.
Contemporary Crafts was announced to be closed back in November, the University has consistently lied about their reasons for closing the course. They claimed a lack of demand, yet this year the course oversubscribed by 33%. They claimed a lack of employability, yet the crafts industry is worth £3.7 billion to the UK economy and on average 80% of graduates are in employment within 6 months of graduating. They claimed the course is cross subsidised. The course actually makes a 10% profit, but according to Deputy Vice Chancellor Alan Murray all courses are now required to make a 50% profit.
